The best way to bring about change – including government policy – is to change ourselves, and by leading by example we encourage others to do likewise. I think it was Gandhi who said “Be the change you want to see in the world.” And this change really is happening – more and more people are growing their own food, in a way that does not harm the environment. In our village, we have a pig cooperative and these pigs are reared in the most pig-friendly, planet-friendly way imaginable. Lots of people here keep chickens. By simply turning our backs on a destructive, unsustainable system and doing what we know to be right, we can eventually achieve a critical mass which no government will be able to ignore, because ultimately people are always more powerful than governments.
